Political Support

Hazel Blears MP – Salford: Hazel Blears has promised to help residents “fight every inch of the way” to stop a new waste transfer station being built on Green Lane after listening to widespread public opposition.  “My view is that this is a residential area and I don’t think having a big waste transfer station is appropriate. Twenty years ago I used to be the councillor for Monton and Ellesmere Park so I know the area very well indeed. That’s why I was concerned to hear at the consultation day that there would be 160 heavy goods vehicles moving in and out of the plant every single day. I’ve recently visited the site of a similar operation to see how this would work and some of their trucks were very big.”
Barbara Keeley MP – Worsley: I am opposing the proposal to build an incinerator and waste management facility on Green Lane at the former Mitchell and Shackleton factory site. I believe it is not appropriate to locate a waste management facility so close to residential areas where it could have a negative impact on people’s lives.

I have written to Salford Council stating my objections to this proposal. I have urged the council to reject this option in favour of a more sustainable use of the site and one which is more suited to a mainly residential area.

I am also concerned about the amount of traffic, congestion and pollution that could be created by the proposed use which could pose an extra and unacceptable risk to the health of local people.

On behalf of local people, I will continue to oppose the proposal.

Iain Lindley – PPC Worsley and Eccles South: This development will have a huge detrimental effect on local residents in Monton, Winton, Eccles and Patricroft. I’m really pleased to see so many local people who care about their community submitting objections. No planning application has been submitted yet, and I will make sure I support residents if and when that application goes in; in the meantime I’ve encouraged residents to put forward a positive vision for the future of the Mitchell & Shackleton site by responding to the Core Strategy consultation.
Matthew Sephton – PPC Salford and Eccles: I am looking forward to giving whatever ongoing support I can to this group, which is very well organised and moving along well.  Although the area is still designated as industrial land, it is now only yards from family homes and no longer an industrial area.  It would be far more appropriate for the land to be re-designated to reflect this and I am sure that, with the right knowledge and approach, this ludicrous proposal can be defeated and that a more suitable site be found by the company wanting to develop such a plant.
