- Health Risks – expected minimal reduction life span with constant exposure, increased duration of symptoms for those with respriratory problems,. Dioxins emitted by these plants have been linked to causes of cancer and other illnesses. The rate of infant deaths suffers a signifcant increase in the proximity of an Incinerator. In addition, to the emissions from the incinerator there will also be a vast increase in traffice pollution from the HGVs carried waste to and from the site. This pollution is also linked to respiratory problems and other health issues.
- Environmental Smells – from transported waste and plant processing emissions. The developer “can’t guarantee” there won’t be smells generated by the plant. Advice might be to avoid having outdoor barbeques on hot summer days. Odours emitted by processing plants carry in the air for several miles.
- Pests – With waste and smell come pests. Although the developer are keen to highlight that the waste is tranported in enclosed trucks and processed in enclosed buildings. Unless the carriage and buildings are airtight in every sense of the word, and the waste is transfered through a spacestations airlock, the site wiithout doubt will attract rats, rodents and other scavengers.
- Lower Property Values – No one wants to live next door to a dump, property values in the immediate area could drop by as much as 40%. That is assuming house can be sold at all. The presence of the plant will make it much more difficult to sell your property. The first thing that will appear on a standard property search will be the presence of the eco-dump.
- Increased Traffic – Dump trucks carrying 800 tonnes(per day) of waste including rotting restaurant food, passed your residential housing. The residents of Canal Bank have pursued and requested traffic calming measures for several years now. Although, the developer claims that the traffic increase will be around 1%. This doesn’t take into account the weight or payload of the trucks. Even if the plant passes planning, what if there is a requirement to process more waste. This means more trucks. There is no guarntee that traffic won’t increase with propcessing requirements.
- Environmental Noise – In order to process the target amount of waste it may be necessary for the eco-dump to run 24hrs a day. The plant will generate noise, but it is assumed that the motorway between the plant and the residential housing will block some of the noise. This means that there will in any event be more noise from the plant during the day. Noise will of course be more apprarent in the evenings when motorway traffic is reduced.
- Risk of Accidents – Only 10 of these plant exist across Europe. Of these 10 plants 2 have has serious industrial accidents within the first period of operation. The accidents resulted in the hospitalisation of both employees and local residents.
- Risk to Children Park – The processing plants will be located on the other side of the M602 motorway adjacent to Shacleton St children’s park. Expect your children to be on the front line for any health issues, unpleasant odours or serious industrial accidents.
- Incinerator Tower – Dangers aside, emissions from the process will be dispersed into the local air via a flue or chimney stack. A serious blot on our landscape.
